...is safety.
From the outside, it doesn't look like a very comfortable place to be - but inside, I feel sheltered, protected, safe. Inside my box, I don't need to think - everything I need is boxed up with me. Inside my box, I don't need to fear - unless someone opens it up and tries to pull me out.
But inside my box, it's dark. And you know? Sometimes, it gets a little lonely. Sure, I have a pal there, sharing the darkness with me. But sometimes, that pal isn't so great - there aren't any heart-to-heart conversations, and more often than not this pal of mine says pretty harsh things to me and tells me to do some pretty nasty things. But after being shut up for so long with only one thing for company, you become dependant on that one thing. It becomes a comfort in the cold and dark, a voice when no one else will hear you speak, an answer to your questions and a guide when you are lost. Having something always there, no matter what, - a constant amongst all the change - becomes the only thing you have, the only thing you know you can rely on, your only sense of "self".

But recently, I've been starting to feel sort of cramped and trapped in here. It's too cold, too dark - my personal space is being invaded... My every thought is shadowed, my every "bright" moment smothered by something I can't see, but sure as heck can sense and hear. I have moments where I think I see a gap in the edges of my box... Realization that this isn't all there is, that there is a whole other world out there, waiting to be lived. Darkness, of course, quickly works to patch up that gap, telling me I've been decieved. But I saw it, I felt it. The thing I share my box with isn't the only thing that "cares" about me and "loves" me. People, friends, family, they're real? They've been trying to tell me that my box isn't safe? Isn't a nice place to be? Woah... Maybe I've been decieved by something else, I haven't been seeing things or imagining things. This "other world" does exist. Life outside my box is real. Where a smile is not frowned upon, where a bite to eat is not transformed into pounds of flesh and fat, where loving isn't painful and loving myself isn't wrong. Have I been missing out? Has my box been keeping me from all of this... The real meaning of life and living?
I mightn't be completely free from the bonds ED has wound around me, but slowly, sometimes without my notice, the bonds are loosening and the light from outside is getting in to my darkness. The shadow, the stain on my heart and mind and soul, is washing out. Yes, sometimes it hurts, it hurts like Hell. It wells up in my eyes and pours down my cheeks, it forms in my brain and flows out of my mouth, it aches in my stomach and screams in my head and turns everything into a chaotic mess - but it dies down.
I'm realizing, that the harder ED scratches, the louder ED screams, the further away he is getting from me. His cries of pain are caused by the ties bonding us together loosening, stretching and snapping. It hurts ED, and in the process it hurts me, but afterwards, I'm left with a sense of... Self. If I can call it that. I mightn't know who Eleanor is at this point in time, but at least I'm starting to understand that Eleanor isn't Ed. Eleanor is Eleanor, ED is an Eating Disorder, which I will not be defined by.
Something did come out of the box today, though. I finally mustered up the courage to tell my Mum about my blogging. It was scary - unbelievably so. But a huge weight was taken off of my chest once the words were spoken. She knows, and she is okay with it. Secrets shouldn't always be kept secret. Sometimes, they're better off being entrusted with a person you love, so that they can keep it safe for you.
I'm sorry for the narrative - if any of you can make sense of this, you deserve a congratulations. And a medal!
But most importantly, you all deserve to be free. Free to live, free to love, free to be you. Free to love yourself.
But most importantly, you all deserve to be free. Free to live, free to love, free to be you. Free to love yourself.
love, love, love.

This is a truly beautiful post, Eleanor. You are such an eloquent writer. I'm so glad to see that you have decided to not let ED define you. I honestly feel like anyone who has/had an eating disorder would be able to relate to your words today, I know I can. It even helped me see why ED is so falsely comforting to me.
Also - my mom was my blog's first reader, and many of my other family members read it as well, I find it to be extremely helpful because it gives them a true glimpse of what I'm going through, which makes it easier for them to help and encourage me.
Stay strong and have a fabulous day! -Kylee
P.S. I'm adding you to my blogroll.
a lovely post my precious. i have been missing you. muacks. im so happy for you having won the best dressed award! gosh, you are a truly beautiful and gorgeous young lady.
dont be afraid to be yourself, cos it's the REAL eleanor that everyone adore. not the 'eleanor' that tries so hard to win the love and beauty.
you are amazingly awesome, my love. stay strong.
all i can say is that you write beautifully from your heart<3
I think this is one of my FAVOURITE posts of all time... seriously I am contemplating bookmarking it on my computer :P You said it ALL - so much truth... so much honesty. I am blown away, yet again, at your insight.
I admire your awareness so much, Eleanor! It makes me so happy to watch you transform... slowly but surely you are gaining health. Physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
ED has a purpose in your life, and whether or not you have realized this, you are living it: you will learn so much more about your true identity than you ever thought possible. One day, when ED is gone for good, the strong, courageous, and beautiful Eleanor will be there, standing up straight next to a crumpled cardboard box that has been tossed to the side.
You are BEAUTIFUL!

Eleanor - what a lovely post - we are so much more than our eating disorder!!!! We should be free to love and enjoy life!!!!!!! Have a great weekend - aim
eleanor is not Ed. honey you are so right & i'm so glad you are taking steps forward :) beautiful post!
i think its great that you told your mom about the blog, i know it helps that my mom knows.
happy saturday dear!!
xoxo
what a great analogy. The fact that you are seeing 'gaps of light' inside your box is a wonderful thing. Keep fighting, and soon you'll have to wear sun glasses (yeah, i know, lame joke :))
congrats on telling your mom about blogging, too. That takes a lot of courage!
xoxo
Have a great day!
Very beautifully written, Eleanor... you did a wonderful job of capturing the way living with an ED feels. ED tries to convince us that he's the only thing important in our lives, but that's everything but the truth. The truth is that ED is keeping us from everything important in our lives...
I know the world outside the box can be scary at first. The light is so blinding after being in the darkness for so long... but the light lets us see all the beautiful things that life has to offer. And I can tell that you're slowly emerging from your box :)
xoxo
this is beautifully written, eleanor. you have so much going for you besides stupid ED. you are gorgeous, articulate, and funny! you really should consider writing for some money ;)don't ever let ED overshadow the eleanor that i know, because the world loves you for you. love you girl! and congrats on telling your mom about your blog, that is HUGE! i'm glad to hear she is ok with it, you may find a huge support in her :)

Such a beautifully written post Eleanor, your honesty is so refreshing to read. Hold on to that bit of hope, my love. Because that inner strength is going to be what gets you through the tough times. And you WILL get through them, I know it.
So proud of you for telling your mum about your blog!

you are such a fantastic writer eleanor. i could not have worded ED any better. I think you were able to personify him perfectly! i loved the whole box analogy--so perfect.
you are SO beautiful and amazing, just like this post :]
and i THANK you for the narrative ;] it was lovely.
love you,
becca
Okay I read the whole post, where's my medal? Totally kidding... ;) I read this TWICE and am even considering printing it out or something. Possibly a bit creepy but whatever! Honestly, there is so SO much more to Eleanor than a stupid eating disorder. And one of those things is that she is an incredible writer. Not only could I "make sense" of the metaphor, but it beautifully phrased how it feels to live in an ED, better than I can word it in my own head to myself. Seriously, your words should be bound and sold in bookstores or something! I'm honored to have gotten to read them.

P.S. Every time I saw the word box I thought of the SNL "D*ck in a box" skit. I know, I'm so mature.
