Being able to put your trust in someone is vital if you're serious about your relationship with that person. And likewise, they have to be able to put their trust in you for the relationship to be a sound, solid one. It's not a one-way street, and that's something I've really been trying to remind myself of lately, because trust and honesty is something I've really been having issues with, lately.
Most of us are brought up knowing that "telling the truth" is very important, and lying is not acceptable. It's bad, and it's punished. Rightly so! You wouldn't want to be friends with a liar, you wouldn't want to be friends with someone you couldn't trust, right? Of course not. Some people easily trust others, and some have issues with trust. They're both absolutely acceptable - it all depends on the person you are and the experiences you've had. But when it comes to trusting yourself, well, that's when things get messy.
Every day I wake up knowing I'll have to face the monster in my head. Every day I have to face the abuse, the taunts, the persuasions, the sick, self-loathing thoughts. Waking up to that every day, and going through that every day, for too many days, has slowly started to whittle away at my self respect. And in having my level of self respect depleted, my level of honesty and truthfulness has hit an all time low, too. Not just to others, but to myself.
This is the first of my philosophical Eleanor in a while. This train of thought was sparked by this morning's happenings. I got up early, as per-usual, did my daily morning yoga, and started to get my breakfast ready. No one is up at the hour I'm up, so this is my "me" time, whatever that is. Anyway, I ate my breakfast while blog reading (as per-usual!) and once I'd finished, I sat there for a few minutes. Then I did something completely out of the ordinary. I got up, put my hand in a cereal box I've never eaten before, and put some flakes into the bowl. Not many, but a small handful nonetheless. Then I poured some soymilk over them, sat back down at the computer, and ate it.
...What did you just do!? You didn't need that! You've got to cut something out of your meal plan today! You're going to get so fat, so huge, look at you, you're disgusting.
...What did you just do!? You didn't need that! You've got to cut something out of your meal plan today! You're going to get so fat, so huge, look at you, you're disgusting.
Yep! Cue ED roaring. But that's not the most important part. The most important part of this is, after my Mum got up and made her breakfast, I went and stood out the back with her. And I told her what I'd done:
Me: I did something I don't normally do.
Mum: Mmm? What's that?
Me: After I finished my breakfast, I went back, and I got some more.
Mum: ...*crickets chirp*...
Me: I did something I don't normally do.
Mum: Mmm? What's that?
Me: After I finished my breakfast, I went back, and I got some more.
Mum: ...*crickets chirp*...
...She didn't say a word. She did not say one thing to me about it. Actually, she didn't say anything at all. I waited, shifting my weight from one leg to the other, waiting for her to say something. But she didn't. She didn't even look at me.
I told her the truth. I was honest with her. It was... God, it was so hard for me to admit to that, because again abuse was hurled at me from ED's direction. But I told her, I was true and honest with her, despite how scary it was and despite how much it hurt. Little did I know I'd be hurt so much more after being ignored by her.
It's nearing 6 in the afternoon now, and still Mum hasn't said anything to be about it. Of all people, I would have though Mum would understand. I thought of all people, Mum would be proud of me, and tell me she was proud. But she didn't. I am so angry at her, so angry. She didn't and doesn't acknowledge anything I do. She never congratulates me or tells me she's proud. It makes me feel like I'm a failure. That I should just "be better", "be normal".

I'm having trouble keeping my emotions at bay. I was extremely hurt this morning and yeah... I did cry. I haven't been able to mention anything to her, because I know she'll just get mad at me. I keep thinking I've done something wrong. Maybe I shouldn't have had that extra cereal. Maybe it was bad, wrong, stupid. ED's holding onto that and now I'm not so sure that there's any other explanation. I don't want to believe that what I did was wrong, but after Mum's reaction all I'm able to feel is regret, not pride. I know I was nourishing my body, by giving that extra fuel, just on a whim, just because. But rationality and logic aren't playing big in my head at the moment. ED's taken advantage of the weakened state of my mind and keeping me firmly in his painful grasp.
"You don't need to be honest with anyone, now. No one's going to believe you, anyway. Why not just lie, pretend, no one will know. Your Mum didn't believe you, because no one trusts you. But you can't trust them, either. They're not honest with you.. Sneaking extra into your meals, giving you more... Lying to you. Don't trust them."

ED's playing my parents against me, and I'm afraid that now I'll start doing the same.
But Eleanor, the wise one, the rational one, the logical one, the real owner of this body, keeps telling me that being honest is so important. Regardless of the outcome, it will make me feel better, knowing that I've told the truth.
Now the biggest part is to trust myself. Pushing ED out of the limelight and concentrating on Eleanor. It's a constant fight for attention, but I know who I need to listen to. I know who I need to trust. That's Eleanor. I need to trust Eleanor.

I like philosophical Eleanor ;)
First of all well done for that extra bit of cereal. Conincidently I had an extra slice of bread yesterday cos I just felt a bit peckish, and I can so relate to those feelings of 'oh you shouldn't have done that', 'cut something out'.
However, maybe your mum just didn't realise what you wanted her to say. Good job in telling her, but sometimes parents don't really know what you need from them, so you need to give them some training. I ask my mum to tell me it's 'ok' to eat a little extra...I tell her I would like her to reassure me that it's ok.
She's quite a good student now!
ED will pick up on any simple reaction/observation and transform it into something nasty. There is always a better and more positive interpretation...try to find it and hold onto it for dear life.
This post is very honest and you do well to trust yourself. You have your best interests in mind, and ED does not.

Sweet, I'm sorry you didn't get the reaction that you wanted from your mom, but you did GOOD by taking that extra cereal. And you don't need anyone's approval but your own.
I think it's really difficult for parents to deal with ED's... it's hard for them to always be able to gauge what's right and what's not because the thoughts and behaviors of ED are not easily understood by those who don't experience them. I can easily say that my parents made countless errors throughout my struggles... they said the wrong thing.... they did the wrong thing... but at the end of the day, they had my best interest at heart... they simply didn't know what to do. Maybe you should have a talk with your mom... instead of torturing yourself about why she didn't say anything, ask her...
You need to know that it's okay for you to recover for you and you don't need anyone else's permission to do so. You're smart, you know what you need... and above all, you deserve what you need.
Stay strong, beautiful one <3
I think one of the hardest relationships to come to an understanding with is the daughter-mother relationship, regardless of ED. You know how we tend to expect perfectionism from ourselves? And we feel like we are crumbling because every time we look at the world, we think it should be better than it is? (Sorry if I'm making assumptions here!) I think that is the way it is with our mothers; we project our expectations of idealism on them. Why isn't she acting the way we expect mothers to act?
But the truth is, our mothers are just people like us, who make mistakes, who can't read other people's minds, who get preoccupied by work. I used to get so [silently] mad at my mom for not saying what I thought she should say, etc. And I would cry, too. But then I realized.. my mom can't *know* what I'm thinking all the time, and she doesn't *know* the reactions that I would use if I were in her place. So I have to stop expecting her to be superhuman. As much as I love her, she's not superhuman ;)
I'm all for philosophy; therefore, I'm all for you. :P
i like the philosophical eleanor as well :] except i HATE my philosophy class in school hahaha. i'm so proud of you darling for taking that leap of faith--no need to get reinforcement from you mom. my mom does the exact same thing and i've learned that i should just be proud of myself, let myself congratulate me for my accomplishment. you don't need your mom's approval to know that what you did today was amazing and NECESSARY! this is your recovery and only you can make it work. love you SO much baby. stay strong and keep doing what your doing!

i think you did wonderfully taking the extra bit of cereal. and i agree i just think your mom didn't know what to say. maybe she doesn't realize that it wasn't an easy thing to do. i'd talk to her gently about it, just to let her know how you're feeling (because remember honesty is best)
and i also agree the only approval you need is your own. & you don't need to cut anything out to make up for the extra bit of cereal.
you can do this. keep going strong love!
xoxo
eleanor! way to go take that extra cereal :) your body is telling you that it needs it...and you followed yourself and fed eleanor. sounds stupid, but it's so unbelievably hard. and each step like this you take only makes you stronger. baby steps, girl. rome wasn't built in a day :)
and your mom is an entirely different ballpark. it's so hard for people to not understand the significance of you accomplishments. part of it is not their fault. they just don't know what it's like. but at some point, a person is able to recognize when someone else feels proud of themselves, and should respond accordingly. has your mom ever talked to your therapist? once my mom started talking with her, she was able to better understand what was going on and helped me out in a better way.
keep up with the baby steps eleanor, whether you know it now or not, that was amazing. little things like that are what make the big changes happen. it has made me appreciate the little things in life, and i now see life through an entirely different lens.

Eleanor!
I am so proud of you for taking some extra cereal. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, and you most certainly should be brimming with self-confidance and pride for the stab you took at ED.
If only it were that simple, eh?
I am terribly sorry that you got such an unexpected response from your mom. It's so hard for non-disordered people to understand just how much of a leap that was in your recovery. Don't let the absence of her congratulations take away from the significance of this accomplishment. YOU are learning to do what you want.. not what ED wants, or even your mama for that matter. Eleanor's accomplishment's are her own, and NO ONE can take them away from her :)
One day, my beautiful friend, you will wake up with a peaceful mind with only the thoughts of Eleanor swirling around inside it. You will grab an extra handful of cereal, not thinking for a minute how it should affect the rest of your meals... this life may seem like a fantasy but it is so much closer than you can imagine. The light is just around the corner... stay strong and keep fighting.

hey eleanor[: im so proud of you for taking that extra cereal! there was NOTHING wrong with that sweetie, it was amazing. and im sorry your mom didnt react the way you had plaannned but i think think its just because your momma doesnt understand. my mom was so confused by my ed, she never knew what to say! your parents love you SO much and they really want to do all they can to help, they just dont know what that is sometimes. maybe you should just have a talk with your mom and tell her how you feel. you are so much stronger then ed and i know that in ten years you will wake up and not feel his presence but only feel the beautiful, amazing presence of eleanor[: have an amazing sunday girlie! xoxo soph
Well done Eleanor! I know it cant be easy dealing with the after thoughts but eating that extra bit of cereal was like taking a big step towards you getting your voice back and listening to what you really want.
Im sorry your mother hasnt responded how you would have liked but maybe she just doesnt know how to react.
People can find it very difficult to understand eds so maybe she just doesnt know what to say incase she is scared of triggering the wrong reaction and maybe to her what you did for a normal reaction. After all if people are hungry they will eat and go for that extra bowl.
Anyhow well done, you did the right thing :-)

Eleanor - way to go on taking that extra cereal - im so proud of you!!!! Im sorry your mom didn't give you the feedback that you had hoped for - i can totally relate - it always seems that parents usually comment on the bad rather than the good - well I'm proud of you and im sure all of the other bloggers are too!!! You are an inspiration - keep fighting - i beliee in you!!! xoxo aimee
First of all, I am SO proud of you for going back for more cereal! That is a huge deal! I'm honestly surprised your mom didn't congratulate you or tell you she was proud, although I don't know how your relationship is.
I love what you said about trust and honesty. I'm so glad you know you need to trust yourself; Eleanor DESERVES to be listened to and trusted. Good luck, Eleanor. You're moving in the right direction (: -Kylee
i'm so proud of you for taking that extra cereal, dearest :) but you don't me to tell you that, all you need is your own approval, no matter what ED says. <3 love you.
For what it's worth, I think it's awesome that you DID take that extra cereal! I know what kind of insults ED can throw at you for that, but you know what... none of it is true, anyway. Your mom can't possibly understand what it would mean to have her praise / approval on this, or she certainly would have given it to you.
<3 <3
You are such an inspiration, I look forward to your posts every day. Stay true to Eleanor. Keep fighting the good fight, you are SO worth it
Sweet dreams <3

hey girlie,
i'm here to tell you that i'm proud of you. although you do not know me as i have never commented on your blog before, i want you to know that you are showing strength for your honesty and courage in overcoming your ed. a victory is a victory, no matter how small, and you definitely had one over ed today. don't give up, please don't. just remember that i am here for you and so are many other lovely bloggies all over the world, even if it sometimes feels like no one is. and as for you mom, people don't always communicate their emotions in the same way. it's alright to feel angry at first, but please remember that she loves you. we must forgive others so that we can forgive ourselves.
have a lovely day!
xox,
Mandiee
I truly believe that deep down you know taking that extra cereal was the right thing and an absolute triumph, something to feel proud of. If it was a "bad" thing you probably wouldn't have been so forthcoming in going and telling your mom, or expected that positive reaction that you did. While it majorly sucks that she wasn't able to give you the support you'd hoped for, you don't need validation from your mom or anyone else that it's okay to take care of yourself and respect your body. Or at least one day I hope you'll be able to love yourself fully without needing reassurance that doing so is okay... Because it absolutely is!
It sucks that your mom wasn't able to give you the response you'd expected. Sadly she can't read minds, and I imagine she was unsure of how to respond and afraid that whatever she said would be in the wrong and trigger you. But I imagine she's incredibly proud of you. I know I am. :)

Heya, i've just stumbled across your blog, and i love it, really feel like i can relate to it. You should be proud of yourself, and really, im sure the rational you knows that:) I like the way you think, ever heard the quote 'first ED is your friend, and then it tries to kill you', well you are doing fabulously girl.
be proud, and stay honest to yourself
hope you dont mind me commenting
xxVic
**hugs** I'm sorry your mom didn't get it. Honestly I've never felt like my mom got what I was going through or what my struggles and victories meant. But even if she doesn't get it, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be honest with her and with yourself. You know what your body needs and don't let ED use this as an opportunity. You should be proud of yourself!
Eleanor,
my little philosopher ;p I AM so proud of you for going back and getting more cereal, it was a spontaneous, wonderful, beautiful thing you did and should be totally celebrated! I'm sorry you didn't get what you needed from your mom, but just know that you fought and it was scary but you did it, you ripped up a tiny piece of the ed box that encompases us, and you have the strength to keep ripping and tearing until you're free, like a beautiful butterfly! haha, because you are beautiful eleanor. I love you and am always here for you, TRUST eleanor. she's got this.
love you <3 <3

Oh Eleanor, I'm sure your mom GOT it. But, she can never ever truly and completely understand the struggle. But I'm sure, she understood that it was a victory for you. And you know what? EVERY ONE of us here in the blog land is proud of you.
Perhaps, your mom didn't want to make a big fuss, because you have more ways to go, and she didn't want you to be overly satisfied and complacent with where you are?
Whatever the reason, remember that you are doing this for YOURSELF. This is YOUR life, and YOU are the sole person responsible for it. Lying is only hurting yourself. I know...because I used to lie all the time too, and deceive my parents. The person who got hurt most was myself.
But anyway...GOOD job on the challenge, Eleanor! Keep up the great work, and you know we're all here rooting for you!
